For most students, financial aid is the key to higher education. Fortunately, students can apply for the financial aid they need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at no cost to them. In addition, if a student feels overwhelmed with the process, he or she can attend FAFSA Day on October 27. At this free, state-wide event, expert financial aid administrators help students and parents with the FAFSA.
What is the FAFSA?
FAFSA is a free application designed to give students access to the largest source of financial aid available to pay for college. Through the FAFSA, students can gain access to their share of more than $120 billion in work-study funds, grants and loans each year. However, a student must complete a FAFSA to qualify for any of the money.
Completing the FAFSA is the first step toward getting financial support for higher education. Many states and colleges determine students’ eligibility for state and school aid based on the student’s FAFSA. Even some scholarship providers may use information from the FAFSA to help determine if a student qualifies for need-based aid. In the 2015-16 academic year, students missed out on more than $2.7 billion in federal financial aid by not filling out the FAFSA, according to Nerd Wallet. Students should not let a form stand in the way of higher education.
What is FAFSA Day?
College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC), the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NCASFAA) and the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) have teamed up to help students complete and submit their FAFSAs at campuses across the state. FAFSA Day is on Saturday, October 27 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. At each location, financial aid administrators will be available to help students tackle their FAFSA forms with confidence.
How do I get Involved?
Any North Carolina students who are interested in getting help with their financial aid can register for FAFSA Day. Since this event has numerous locations across the state, visit our FAFSA Day Map to find the campus location nearest you.
Parents are welcome to attend FAFSA Day alongside their student. For a student to complete the FAFSA, parents will need to provide 2017 tax information. Each student and one parent will need an FSA ID to sign the FAFSA.
The College Foundation of North Carolina is an excellent resource in helping students plan, apply and pay for college. FAFSA Day is one more event where students can get help paying for college.
